Intent

My photography work is portrait based and is focusing on documenting sociological tendencies.

I am involved in photography because this medium allows me to visualize my intentions in the best way. This mediums are a tool to directly document, analyze and question individual life styles and tendencies in society. The documentation helps me to communicate the sensation of being close to the truth.

Nevertheless, my work reveals not a pure observation of reality; it is rather on the boundary between fiction and non-fiction. In using my personal visual language the material gets alienated and is thus in between the real and the not real, the common and the particular.

For each project I choose a particular visual concept. I.e. I decide that the composition of elements in my photograph will be the same in all the images that are part of one particular series. I find it important to work in a clear, minimalist way to be able to emphasize certain details.

In terms of subject matter, sociological, cultural and political issues are always explored. I am often interested in individuals who explore situations in isolation. Even though I focus on personal lives, I want to show the whole collective experience that is composed by these individuals. The different locations where I used to live have influenced the choice of my subject matter as well.

My work has been influenced by artists such as August Sander, Diane Arbus, Rineke Dijistra or Albrecht Tuebke, who all have the common element of working in the documentary photography tradition.
